Taif is a city located in the western part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, specifically near Mecca, and geographically extends between longitudes 40 and 42 degrees east of Greenwich, and between latitudes 20 and 24 degrees north of the equator. Taif also ranks sixth among Saudi cities in terms of population, with an estimated population of about 1,750,000 people, and the city includes 38 administrative centers.

Taif is also one of the first cities to witness urban planning and was the first city visited by the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. It was also the first city where a Saudi plane landed, and the first formal school focusing on Islamic studies was established. Taif enjoys a long and complex history as it has witnessed many significant events through the ages. In 1934, a treaty was signed between the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on its territory, ending the Saudi-Yemeni war. The city also hosted the Arab Football Championship for national teams in 1986, the Arab Athletics Championship, and the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1989. Additionally, Taif was part of the Islamic Conference held in Mecca in the early eighties, and in 1989 it hosted the Taif Agreement, which led to reconciliation between the Lebanese factions during the Lebanon War.
The city of Taif includes a number of prominent landmarks, including Shubra Palace, which is one of the most prominent historical palaces in the city. It was built during the Ottoman period and is characterized by its architectural design that combines Islamic and Roman styles. There is also the Saisad Dam, located in the southeastern part of Taif, built during the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan. The Wahbah Crater is a volcanic crater consisting of deep holes in the ground with a shallow small lake at its base.
