The city of Al Khafji is located in the northeast of Saudi Arabia, and it is one of the coastal cities in the Kingdom and is located on the Arabian Gulf. In the past, residents used to move there in search of grass and water. After the oil concession agreement between Saudi Arabia and Japan, people came to work in oil, making it a populated area.
The name Al Khafji has several origins. Some say its land is low, and the elderly used to refer to low places as "Khafsi," from which the name is derived. It is also said to come from "al-Khafiq," meaning (salty water) because its waters are salty. Another belief is that it is associated with the "Khafj" plant that grows in the spring. Additionally, the name could be derived from the ancient Khafaji tribes that inhabited the area.
Its population reached about 84,316 people according to the census of 2022, and its area is about 8000 square kilometers.
Al Khafji is famous for its corniche, which rivals other coastal cities in Saudi Arabia. It extends up to 6 kilometers and features many restaurants, recreational games, sports pavements, in addition to numerous flowers and palm trees along its sides, and light poles that illuminate the corniche at night.
It is noteworthy that Al Khafji was occupied by the Iraqi army in 1990 AD and was liberated in 1991 AD. The local administration then evacuated and cleaned the city of all war remnants in 1992 AD.
The city of Al Khafji is known for having many pastoral areas, but due to overgrazing, these areas have diminished. The city also has a large number of animals such as: the Arabian fox, the Arabian hare, and the houbara bustard.
The city is known for its low temperatures in winter, especially in open desert areas. However, in summer, the temperature rises, and in autumn, rain falls, plants flourish, and tourists come from inside and outside the kingdom.
The equestrian field is one of the most famous areas in the city of Al Khafji, where residents celebrate many heritage activities such as horse riding and equestrian races, which attract a large number of tourists.
Al Khafji also includes many recreational areas, such as: the zoo in the Al Aziziya area, Al Khafji amusement park with the latest recreational games, in addition to Al-Abeer Park which has green spaces and children's games.
The city has several shopping malls, such as: Al Khafji Markets, Al Louloua Mall of Al Khafji, and Groove Center which includes many restaurants and cafes, such as: Al Ghoroob Restaurant, and Chemistry of Coffee Café.
