Al-Ula is a city located in the northwestern part of Saudi Arabia, administratively part of Medina. It is about 300 kilometers away and is considered one of the tourist destinations. The city was mentioned by Yaqut al-Hamawi in his dictionary. The Prophet Muhammad passed through it on his way to the Battle of Tabuk, and a place for a mosque was designated, known as Masjid al-Izam.
In addition, there are two famous springs with fresh water, namely Al-Ma'laq and Tudl, and near the source of the Al-Ma'laq spring, there are a group of tall date palm trees called Al-Aali.
The city is situated between two mountains on a fertile valley where a variety of date palms, citrus fruits, and other fruits are grown. Despite scarce rainfall, there are groundwater sources. Al-Ula is also one of the archaeological sites registered with UNESCO, as it used to be the capital of the Nabateans. The climate is hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and it includes around 300 villages.
In 2018, a joint agreement was signed between the Saudi and French governments to begin working on the development project for the entire Al-Ula region. This project aims to protect and promote all forms of cultural heritage, increase scientific knowledge, and open new avenues for sustainable tourism, particularly in this distinguished archaeological site.
Therefore, in February 2019, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman launched what is called the Vision for Al-Ula project, aimed at developing the region into a major tourist heritage destination while preserving all forms of natural and cultural heritage within the area in collaboration with a group of international experts. The project is estimated to cost around 120 billion riyals from the total value of the local GDP.
Indeed, in July 2024, it was announced that the Al-Ula region had received accreditation from the International Organization of Tourist Regions and Destinations, based in the United States, making it the first region in the Middle East to receive this official accreditation.
