Riyadh is considered the heart of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the second largest region in the Kingdom after the Eastern region, with an area of 19.4% of the Kingdom's territory. It also has a large population and ranks first in terms of population, containing 26.7% of the total population of the Kingdom.
Riyadh was named by Prince Duham bin Dawas Al-Shaalan, and it was previously named Riyadh Al-Aarith in reference to the Al-Aarith mountains that border it from the north and east. It is worth mentioning that the name Riyadh is recently attributed to this area and was not mentioned in ancient narratives. The city of Riyadh was historically under the region named Al-Saeedah. Riyadh is distinguished by being the capital of the country, the seat of governance and administration, and it includes the palace of government, which has been the launch point for all princes and kings of the Kingdom since the era of King Fahd bin Abdulaziz.
Before the modern development witnessed by Riyadh, education in the past went through several stages, starting with kuttabs that were held in mosques and homes, through private schools established by volunteers, until Riyadh saw various formal schools, colleges, institutes, and private universities.
It is worth mentioning that the Riyadh region is filled with many natural resources and minerals such as marble and gold, among many other minerals used in various industries, which contribute to economic progress and prosperity. Mining activities flourished after the advent of Islam during the Abbasid Caliphate.
Archaeological areas have been discovered in the city of Riyadh during a survey of the area, revealing finds dating back to the Old Stone Age, indicating that ancient peoples depended on primitive agriculture, animal domestication, and hunting. Among the most important archaeological sites in Riyadh are Al-Masmak Palace, which is the fort seized by King Abdulaziz during the conquest of Riyadh, and the Birma Cave, which contains inscriptions dating back to 2400 years. Additionally, there are archaeological sites in Dawadmi Governorate, most notably Al-Baida' mountain located in Dawadmi, the Baraqah and Mukhouqah mountains located north of Dawadmi Governorate.
Among the famous tribes that lived in Riyadh are the Bani Bakka, Banu Hanifa, Bani Yazeed, and other tribes not mentioned in history.
