The city of Duba is one of the cities located in the northern part of the western coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the shores of the Red Sea. The city is about 300 kilometers south of the peak of the Gulf of Aqaba and administratively follows the Tabuk region, which is the center of the Duba Governorate. The population reached 25,601 according to the 2010 statistics. In the past, Duba was an important port for trade and fishing in the northern Red Sea, and its residents still call it the Pearl of the Red Sea. The name of the city, Duba, refers to a house or inn that hosted pilgrims coming from Egypt. It was also known as Dar Al-Sultan in reference to Sultan Qaitbay, who stayed there. Some princes and sultans dug wells in Duba to provide water for Egyptian pilgrims. Sheikh Abdul Ghani Al-Nabulsi mentioned the city in his journey that passed through it in the year 1205 AH.
The city of Duba witnessed significant growth during the Saudi period. In the year 1352 AH, King Abdul Aziz Castle was built in the city, which became the local governance headquarters. This event contributed to attracting attention to Duba and led to its notable development in the last ten years of the twentieth century. During this period, the city attracted many development and service projects and saw the establishment of many modern neighborhoods, such as Al-Samda, Al-Sahil, Al-Matar, Al-Qurfa, Al-Muqaytah, and also South and West Al-Muqaytah, Al-Dhahiyah, and North of Aramco.
Economic activity in Duba began in 1994 through the Duba commercial port, which is the backbone of the city's and the governorate's economy. Near the port, the Tabuk Cement Factory was established, providing essential support for construction in the northern and northwestern regions of the Kingdom. Additionally, there are many industrial institutions in the city, and 45 kilometers northeast of Duba lies the largest iron mine in Saudi Arabia, which contains high-concentration iron ore and is only 25 kilometers from the port. Other vital projects in Duba include the recent discovery of natural gas in the Midian area north of Duba and the gas project north of the Red Sea near the city's coasts.
