Shaqra is a Lebanese town located in southern Lebanon, in the Nabatieh region, at an altitude of about 686 meters above sea level, while its area is about 20 km², and its population has reached about 17,000 people according to statistics. Inside the town, there are archaeological sites such as the Dobieh Castle in addition to the Shaqra Mosque.
During the feudal eras, specifically under Ottoman rule, the town was part of the Hunin region, which was part of Bishara, consisting of about four districts: Hunin with its center in Bint Jbeil, Jabal Tibneen, the coast of Qana, and the coast of Ma’araka.
Later, the town was annexed to Marjayoun, but this new geographic division was not suitable because it was far from all transportation lines. Citizens at that time had to travel about 100 kilometers to reach the administrative center to obtain an identity card.
After 1953, based on Decree No. 89 dated April 14, the residents of Shaqra and Dobieh requested to join Bint Jbeil. At the end of 1954, an official decree was issued officially annexing Shaqra and Dobieh to Bint Jbeil, despite strong opposition from local families. Later, in 1959, by a decision from the Interior Minister Ahmad Bazi, a municipality named Shaqra Municipality was established. Sayyid Mohsen Al-Amin, who has many significant printed literary works, being one of the first writers to combine knowledge with literature. His works have reached dozens of volumes.
As for the famous Dobieh Castle, it is a fortress built by the Crusaders on the ruins of a Roman building. Its length is about 125 meters and its width about 80 meters, with a large moat and surrounded by a valley on three sides except the south side. It originally had three layers, but the third was destroyed by Israeli attacks in 1972. It contains thirty rooms with a chamber containing a well inside and an external reservoir carved into the rock.
