Arar is a Saudi city located on the northern border of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia adjacent to the city of Nukhayb in Iraq. It is about 390 kilometers away from Jordan and approximately 1100 kilometers from Riyadh. Arar is also an administrative and commercial center for the northern regions of Saudi Arabia.
It is bordered to the north by Iraq, to the south by Qassim, Hail, and Sakaka, to the west by Jordan and Al-Qurayyat, and to the east by the Eastern Province.
The city of Arar is named after the Arar Valley, which cuts through the city from the south and northeast. It was named for the abundance of juniper trees found there. In the past, it was called (Badnah) because of the Badnah Valley that runs through it from the east to the west.
The city was established by Prince Mohammed Al-Ahmad Al-Sudairi, where residents from various regions of Saudi Arabia, including Najd, Al-Jawf, and Al-Ahsa, settled. Later, Bedouins came to it in 1395 AH due to the spread of free lands and loans. Its area is about 35,000 square kilometers, and its population reached 202,719 people.
Arar is known as the main gateway for pilgrims coming from Iraq. It is also a center for trade exchange between Saudi Arabia and Iraq, making it one of the most important transit stations for the Hajj season and trade. Additionally, it serves as a connection point between the Gulf states, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.
In the past, Arar was an important station where the oil pipeline passed from Hafr Al-Batin in the east to Sidon in Lebanon in the south. It was called the Arar Oil Station and was known as one of the major business areas for workers in the oil line. As a result, residents arrived and began establishing housing units, eventually leading to the city’s development as the administrative capital of the northern borders of the Kingdom.
Arar is characterized by its fertile land, which supports the growth of many juniper trees, and it is a notable grazing area. It houses three of the largest valleys in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Arar Valley, Al-Ouwayyyissi Valley, and Badnah Valley.
Arar is also one of the most important mining areas in the Kingdom, extracting limestone and dolomite.
Some of the most famous tourist attractions in Arar include the Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Mosque, which has a unique architectural style and is considered an architectural masterpiece. It is excellently located amid beautiful gardens. Arar National Park is among the most important parks in Arar with many plants, trees, and children's games. Additionally, the Palm Garden, which contains many palm trees and naturally growing trees without human intervention.
