Suez is one of the largest Egyptian cities overlooking the Red Sea. The Suez Canal was named after it and is located at the head of the Gulf of Suez. Its area is 250.400 square kilometers, and its population is about 775,513 thousand people.
It was formerly called Al-Kulzam, and it is located in the east of the Nile Delta in Egypt. Its entrance is the Suez Canal in the south; to the north is Ismailia, to the southeast is Sinai, and to the west is Cairo. Suez has three ports: Adabiya Port, followed by Suez Port and Al-Sukhna, in addition to an oil refinery and a group of petrochemical factories that connect Cairo with the Mediterranean Sea through a pipeline called Sumed.
Suez has been nicknamed the City of the Stranger in honor of Sidi Al-Gharib, one of the prominent Sufi figures. It is also known for blocking the road to Cairo against the Israeli army during the October War. Their attempt to occupy it failed due to the resistance of its people under the leadership of prominent figures such as Sheikh Hafiz Salama.
As for the administrative division, it includes several districts: Suez District, which houses most of the official bodies and interests; El-Arbaeen, a popular district; and Ataqa District, which includes most of the residential areas along with factories and companies.
The district was divided into two: Faisal and Sabah, and Ataqa District, in addition to Al-Janayen District, which predominantly has a rural character. Previous geological research confirmed that the Gulf of Suez extended in ancient Egypt to Lake Timsah and later receded to the south towards the Bitter Lakes. The Pelusiac and Tanitic branches of the Nile crossed the region to the Isthmus of Suez.
The first branch passed near the Tineh station, about 25 km south of Port Said, and the second branch passed at kilometer 9 on the Suez Canal, both emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. After the gulf's waters receded southward, the region became shallow without a port overlooking the Red Sea, thus losing a significant commercial and navigational aspect, retaining only its strategic importance due to the presence of forts, which formed part of Egypt's eastern wall, from the isthmus in northern Sinai to the city of Gaza.
