Al-Arish is a coastal city and the capital of North Sinai Governorate, located in the northeast of Sinai. Its population reached about 207,765 in 2021. It was named in ancient times by a Greek name, Rhinocorura.
As for the neighborhoods and villages of Al-Arish, they include Al-Masa'id, Al-Salam district, Abi Saql, Al-Rissa neighborhood, Al-Fawakhriya, Al-Safaa, and Karam Abu Najila, in addition to Al-Salama, Al-Sumran, and Al-Ayyub families, while the villages of the center include Al-Midan, Al-Tawil, and Al-Sabil.
In Al-Arish, the Zaraniq Protected Area is located east of Lake Bardawil, about 30 kilometers west of Al-Arish. It is a crucial area for bird migration from various parts of the world. Studies have shown the importance of this area due to its unique location linking Asia, Africa, and Europe, making it a crossing bridge for all migratory birds between the continents during autumn and spring each year.
Approximately 244 bird species have been recorded within the protected area, belonging to 14 families, including pelicans, flamingos, ducks, herons, cattle egrets, storks, falcons, sandpipers, couriers, and others.
Among the most important bird species that it receives from Europe and Asia are the shoveler, white pelican, heron, gulls, swallows, and meadow birds. Additionally, 7 bird species live permanently there, including the hoopoe lark, avocet, Alexandrine tern, and the small swallow.
The protected area is one of the most important sites for the reproduction of amphibious turtles and has been included in the global Ramsar list. Currently, maintenance projects are being implemented for wetlands and coastal areas in the Mediterranean basin to achieve sustainable development goals within the reserve by balancing residents' interests with nature conservation. The reserve offers many services such as camping with observation kiosks, as well as a museum and conference hall.
Al-Arish Castle is considered one of the most famous landmarks of the governorate and is the remaining monument. It is located next to the weekly Thursday market in Al-Fawakhriya. It was registered by ministerial decree No. 282 in 97, encompassing an area of 755 square meters containing a well, a garden, and housing for soldiers. This castle witnessed historical events like the Treaty of Al-Arish in 1800 between the Turks and the French expedition.
