Shibin El Kom City is an ancient Egyptian city and the official capital of Monufia Governorate, as well as the capital of Shibin El Kom District. It was known during the Mamluk era as (Shibin Al-Sarai) and this name continued until the beginning of the Ottoman rule over Egypt. It was also one of the villages of Monufia during the Mamluk era, with an area of about 3121 acres at the end of this era.
Currently, Shibin El Kom City is located in the middle of Monufia Governorate, bordered to the north by the city of Berket El Sabe' and the city of Tala, to the east by the city of Quwisna, while to the south by the cities of Sirs El-Liyan, Menouf, Bagour, and Shanawan, in addition to the city of Al-Shohada from the west.
While some names changed in the Mamluk era, it was located between the village of Al Musilaha to the south and east, to the north by Tunbadi and Minyat Khakat, which is currently called (the district of Mit Khakan), and to the west by Al-May and south by Shanawan, as it was close to Menouf, which lies to the south.
When the French campaign came to Egypt, some scholars visited Shibin El Kom and described it as a large village overlooking a wide canal called Al-Qurainin, which branched into two branches, one named (Bahr Shibin) that connected it to the city of Abi'ar, currently known as "Kafr Al-Zayat village in the Gharbia Governorate". They also mentioned that it was located two and a half parasangs from Menouf.
Shibin El Kom contained distinct alleys and sectors unlike other villages, as we find sectors in documents such as (Al-Attarine Qaysariyya) and (the Great Market Sector), and regarding the alleys, we find "Babylon Alley" and "Butchers Alley".
Despite primary reliance on agriculture during this era in Shibin El Kom, it contained many commercial and industrial activities, such as mills, dyeing installations, and oil presses, in addition to the natron salt trade.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Shibin El Kom became the base of a sector from the sectors of Monufia, and it became the base of Monufia in the era of Muhammad Ali Pasha since 1826.
