The city of Banha is the capital of Qalyubia Governorate, one of the governorates of Greater Cairo Region. It is located 45 kilometers north of Cairo Governorate, and its population is 6,182,745 people. This city is almost a peninsula, as water surrounds it from three sides: the east, west, and south. It is also called Banha el-Asal (Banha of Honey) due to its famous production of the best types of honey, known as Banha honey.
The governorate's emblem features the Qanatir al-Khairiya alongside a gear and two ears of wheat. The gear symbolizes the industrial activities of the governorate, and the two ears of wheat represent the agricultural activities of the governorate. Meanwhile, the Qanatir al-Khairiya symbolizes the important role it plays in the regulation of Nile waters within the delta lands. The governorate's national holiday is on August 30th, commemorating the opening of the Qanatir al-Khairiya in 1868 AD.
Banha contains many distinctive monuments and scenic tourist areas, such as the Pharaonic antiquities in the Atreeb area, the pharaohs' tombs in the village of El-Ramlah, the Qanatir al-Khairiya, the palace of Khedive Abbas Helmy, the old Banha bridge, Nasir Mosque, and significant places in the city like the main poultry market of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Banha Sports Stadium which seats nearly ten thousand spectators, the Nile Corniche and Nile Garden, Banha Parking Complex, in addition to Banha University which comprises more than 19 colleges and institutes. It is also a center for electronics manufacturing and the production of rose perfume in Egypt.
Many scientists and celebrities have come from Banha, such as the nuclear scientist Yehia El Mashad, former Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information Ahmed Ezzat Sharara, novelist Fouad Qandil, dean of literature Hussein Al-Marsafi in the era of Khedive Ismail, former Minister of Health Ali Al-Makhzangi, former Minister of Education Gamal Al-Araby, head of the National Council for Youth and professor of political science Mohamed Safi El-Din, and archaeologist Abdel Halim Nour El-Din.
Banha was called Per-Naha in the times of the ancient Egyptians, meaning "Sycamore Barn," as the first part "Per" means barn or house and the second part "Naha" means sycamore trees. These trees were used to make furniture, statues, and coffins in ancient Egypt hence held special significance among the Egyptians. Before Banha became the capital of Qalyubia Governorate, the city of Qalyub was its official capital until 1850 AD, when the Abbas Helmy Palace was built in the city of Banha.
