The city of Sohag is one of the cities in Upper Egypt, and it is the capital of Sohag Governorate, one of the governorates that make up the Upper Egypt region in southern Egypt since 1960 AD. This region also includes the governorates of the Red Sea, Qena, Aswan, and Luxor. The area of Sohag city is about 68 square kilometers, and the governorate consists of 12 cities and 11 centers, which are (Akhmim, Sohag, Al Maragha, Sakalta, Dar Al Salam, Tama, Juhayna, Tahta, Girga, Al Balyana, Al Monshah) and 3 neighborhoods, which in turn are divided into villages and hamlets. The city's population is approximately 5,832,579 people.
The emblem of Sohag features the image of King Narmer, the unifier of the two lands, crowned with the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red crown of Lower Egypt. The emblem also includes a royal necklace decorated with 11 ornamental pieces, indicating the number of centers in the governorate. On the tenth of April, the governorate celebrates its national day, which marks the day when the people of Sohag and other cities of Upper Egypt succeeded in repelling and defeating the French forces' advance towards Upper Egypt.
The city is home to one of the most important universities in Egypt, Sohag University. Many prominent and influential figures in Egypt's history have emerged from this city, including Sheikh Mahmoud Sidqi al-Menshawy, writer Gamal al-Ghitani, and Pope Yousab II of Alexandria. Sohag has been distinguished since the times of ancient Egyptians, as it contains many antiquities such as Abydos, the capital of Egypt during the first four dynasties, where the Abydos Temple is located, and the statue of Queen Merit-Amun, the daughter of King Ramses II.
In addition to the aforementioned antiquities, Sohag includes a collection of the most important historical sites and monuments, such as the Temple of Ramses II, the Mosque of Al-Aref Billah, the Chinese Mosque, the Monastery of Anba Shenouda (the White Monastery), the Monastery of Saint Virgin Mary in the eastern Akhmim mountain, the Monastery of Anba Bishoy, the Monastery of Mar George the Iron, and the Roman theater. Sohag ranks second after Qena Governorate at the national level in sugarcane cultivation, and the city is also known for its handmade textile industry.
Sohag has been famous since ancient Egyptian times as the land of mawaweel (traditional folk songs) due to the famous legend of Isis, where it was mentioned that Isis was weeping and lamenting her husband Osiris in Sohag, which was called Bombai or Sohai at that time, as mentioned in the Dictionary of Countries. In the modern era, its name became Girga until it was given its current name in the mid-twentieth century.
