Dakahlia is a governorate in the northeast of the Delta with its capital Mansoura. It has a population of 6 million people, making it one of the largest governorates in Egypt in terms of population. The name comes from the village of Dekhela which is currently located in the Zarqa Center in Damietta Governorate.
Dakahlia is located in the northeast of the Delta, bordered to the west by Gharbia Governorate, to the north by the Mediterranean Sea, to the northeast by Damietta, and to the northwest by Tell el-Balamun.
The total area is about 3,459 km². The governorate has many archaeological sites, such as the Church of St. George located in Mit Damsis in Aja Center, which consists of two buildings, one dating back 1600 years and the other 120 years.
Additionally, there is a monastery named after Martyr Damiana located in the Belqas Center. There is also the famous Dar Ibn Luqman, located next to the Al-Muwafi Mosque precisely in the center of Mansoura city. It gained its fame because Louis IX was imprisoned in it in 1250 AD for a month, after which his wife ransomed him on May 7, 1250.
A historical museum was established in the house, containing many paintings and various photographs depicting Egyptians defeating the Crusader forces, along with the clothes and weapons used in the battle.
Additionally, there is Tell el-Ruba, which consists of ruins of the ancient city of Mendes, located to the north of the Mendes branch of the Nile River. In medieval times it was called Tell el-Mandara, and during the Pharaonic era, it was called “Wadj.” Dakahlia was the capital of the region, and in the mound, a group of temple stones from the era of Ramses II and his son Mencaure, with the names of kings from the 21st, 22nd, and 26th dynasties, were found.
