Cairo, the capital of Egypt and its largest city, is also the most populous Arab city in terms of population and area. It is ranked second in all of Africa and seventeenth globally, with a population exceeding about 21,322,750 people. Its history dates back to the era of the Fatimids, when Jawhar al-Siqilli began building it by order of the Caliph al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah in 969 AD. The most prominent arts centers in it include the Egyptian Opera House or the National Cultural Center on Zamalek Island. This center was established through a grant provided by the Japanese government and was built in the Islamic style and opened on October 10, 1988.
It is a replacement for the Khedivial Opera House, which was established by order of Khedive Ismail in 1869 and burned on October 28, 1971, after the center served as a cultural beacon for 102 years.
Cairo also serves as the main headquarters for a variety of organizations, both regional and Arab. For example, it hosts the headquarters of the League of Arab States, in addition to the regional offices of many other organizations such as the World Health Organization office, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the International Civil Aviation Organization. Additionally, it hosts the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations Housing Fund headquarters, the United Nations Development Programme headquarters, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and the headquarters of the African Union for Basketball.
